Neha Talavdekar and Girish Joshi MS in Computer Science, 2008

Where are you currently working?

Neha: I'm currently working at Amazon.com in Seattle. I've been a Programmer Analyst for almost three years now. My current responsibilities involve Design, Implementation and Support/Maintenance of the software infrastructure owned by the Finance and Operations team here at Amazon.com.

Girish: I'm a Software Development Engineer II at Microsoft in Redmond, WA. My responsibilities include designing, implementing, maintaining system software which ships in the Windows operating system. I previously worked as a software engineer at both Yahoo and Intel.

What do you enjoy most about your current position?

Neha: I am involved in all aspects of the software development lifecycle. It not only involves coding but also other aspects like understanding the business needs, gathering customer requirements, and creating solutions that will impact and improve the overall work efficiency of the team.

Girish: I enjoyed software design, coding, debugging right from my undergraduate years. In my current job, I get to do plenty of that but I also get to work with some of the brightest engineers in this field and write software which will impact millions of users around the world. That gives me great satisfaction.

What career accomplishment are you most proud of at this point?

Neha: I am happy that my husband and I were lucky enough to get good jobs and have well-established careers in the same geographic location, which is most important for international students given their work permit requirements. I know many families where the wife and husband reside in geographically different locations pursuing their careers and flying to meet each other on weekends.

Girish: I have been with five companies so far, considering both internships and full-time positions. What gives me the most pleasure is that each position required me to learn new technologies, various levels of the software stack and I was able to learn all of that and be successful.

How did your time at IUPUI help you reach your goals?

Neha: The subjects taught for the MS program helped me get a deeper understanding of core areas of Computer Science. My research experience during my thesis made me consider the infinite possibilities that exist and can be discovered and implemented.

Girish: Being at IUPUI helped me dive deeper into the areas of interest like Algorithms/Distributed Computing. Also, interacting with lots of great companies visiting the IUPUI campus for recruiting helped me get my first job faster.

What is your lasting impression of the Department of Computer and Information Science?

Girish: My impression was that CS department has great faculty. They offer you challenging courses that can help you go a long way in your professional career.
