Computer Science Isn't Just for Computer Science Majors

student in computer lab Employers of IUPUI graduates value students with a high understanding of the practical application of computer knowledge of their field.

Computer science supports progress across many other disciplines and develops problem solving, computational thinking, and abstract reasoning skills that can be used in any field.

Admission Requirements

Computer science minors are available to current IUPUI undergraduates only. Upon starting the program, students should consult an advisor, who can be reached at (317) 274-9727.  Students must apply for the minor to have it placed on their record when enrolled in their final minor course.

Two options are available:

Minor in Applied Computer Science

Designed for students pursuing degrees in the social and behavioral sciences, business, liberal arts, and health-related professions, the applied computer science minor provides a broad introduction to the field of computer science and the tools to create technology solutions for application in their field of interest. The program includes courses in software development, data analysis, and web development.

The applied computer science minor requires completion of 19 credit hours of computer science courses with a 2.0 cumulative GPA for required minor courses. No individual grade below a C– is acceptable. At least 12 credit hours earned toward the minor must be taken in residence at IUPUI.

The minor requires: CSCI-N201, Programming Concepts, CSCI N207, Data Analysis Using Spreadsheets or CSCI-N211, Introduction to Databases, CSCI-N241, Fundamentals of Web Development, CSCI 23000, Computing I, and two advanced CSCI electives. These electives are to be taken from the approved list of electives for CSCI majors.

Note: A student may not complete both a Certificate in Applied Computer Science and the Applied Computer Science Minor. Only nine credit hours taken before application to the Applied Computer Science Minor are allowed, and not less than 12 credit hours must be taken in residency at IUPUI.

Minor in Computer and Information Science

Designed for students from math, science, and engineering disciplines whose fields require the use and modification of sophisticated software tools, the computer and information science minor exposes students to the theoretical underpinnings of computer science and software development and can help prepare students for graduate study in computer science or another IT-related field.

The undergraduate minor in computer and information science requires 20 credit hours in computer science courses, including CSCI 23000, 24000, 34000, 36200, and two CSCI elective courses. These electives are to be taken from the approved list of electives for CSCI majors. Course prerequisites must be fulfilled prior to enrollment in CSCI courses. Students who have requested and received approval for the waiver of CSCI 23000, must replace that course with another CSCI major course; for such students, the minimum total computer science credit hour requirement for receiving this minor may be relaxed to 19.

A minimum GPA of 2.5 must be maintained in these courses. At least 9 credit hours of the minor must be taken at IUPUI.
