N241 - Web Design Margaret Lion Stair - Lab 11 - Cascading Style Sheets April 11, 2000 State the Problem: Must create two html documents that read from the same .css document that works on the ds9 server (and hence the rest of the WWW). Tools: Reference Materials: * Niederst * "HTML 4 Dummies" * Castro, "HTML for World Wide Web" * Materials downloaded from class website * Class videoes Hardware: * IBM compatible computer * Paper * Pen and/or pencil * Floppy disk Software: * Notepad * Netscape & MIE * FTP Other: * Websites that contain free graphics of many varied natures. Algorithm: * First, start STAIR for lab. * Second decide on content of the two HTML documents. I like nice content, i.e., something informative and/or entertaining. * Figure out what each required item for the lab is. * Figure out how to make the style sheets and where to put them. * Decide on colors, fonts, backgrounds, etc. * Download images from freebie websites if necessary. * Mark-up on paper what the site will look like. * Tear that up and do it again. * Write CSS poem * Type poem into HTML skeleton * Make master style sheet * Put codes in pages. * Make sure codes work. * Test pages with browser. * Load pages to ds9 server. * Create link for image map page on Index.html page. * Finish STAIR. * Tell Leanne where the image map and STAIR are on my index page. Implement: * Made my STAIR. * Figured out assignment (or rather, tried to). Looked tough. I was right. * Selected background images and graphics from web. * Tested images, saved the ones I liked. * Finished writing poem. * Cut poem in two parts and put them into Html skeleton. * Made my master style CSS sheet. * Tried to get poem parts to work with CSS sheet. Refined code again, and again, and again. * Finally got CSS to work. * Tried to figure-out the rest of the assingment. Didn't understand the questions. * Called friends in town who made webpages, hoping they could explain this to me - none of them were home. * Began to cry as I saw my beautiful A sink into oblivion because the CSS project was either never going to get done, would be turned in very late, or would not meet all the grading assignments because I didn't understand them. * Ah ha! A brilliant idea hit me - I would drive to the lab and pray, pray, pray that Leanne and Tedra were working. * Called my husband, told him I would be late. * Loaded up car, got gas, and went to Indy! * Figured-out assignment and why I didn't understand it with Leanne explaining the instructions to me. * Finished CSS sheets in lab. * Made corrections to my N241 Work page. * Finished Stair Refinement. * Uploaded pages to website. * Tested them. * Emailed good news and thanks to Leanne, Tedra, and copied to Andy so he would know how good they were. Refinement: * Next time I will make sure I totally understand the project before I try to do it. I would have saved myself a lot of agony had I been able to carefully formulate my questions and then email them to Leanne. Then again, maybe not. Sometimes I need the information given to via oral and hands-on guiding instruction. * Even though this caused me much grief, I actually like CSS. I'm planning on using one for my final project.
