N241 - Web Design Margaret Lion Stair - Lab 9 -Frames March 18, 2000 State the Problem: Must create tables and frames that work on my ds9 server. Tools: Reference Materials: * Niederst * "HTML 4 Dummies" * Castro, "HTML for World Wide Web" * Materials downloaded from class website * Andy's HTML checker on his site * Class videoes Hardware: * IBM compatible computer * Paper * Pen and/or pencil Software: * Notepad * Netscape & MIE * FTP Algorithm: * First, make STAIR for lab. * Then figure out what each required item for the lab is. * Mark-up on paper what the site will look like. * Create each item listed on the assignment page individually. * Figure-out how all of the pieces of the assignemnt fit together. * Mark-up the pages in Notepad. * Test pages with browser. * Load pages to ds9 server. * Create link for frames page on Index.html page. Implement: (Please note that all of the below was done with much prayer, crying, and head- banging as I hoped beyond hope that I understood it all and got it right!) * Read and read and read and read the assignment and workbooks and samples and explanations over and over again in order to understand each task and each word in each task. Whew!! I hope I got it right!!!!! * Created master frame. * Created contents frame. * Created display frame. * Uploaded frames to web so could test them. * They didn't work. * Created table. (Hey the 13th try is the charmer.) * Noticed assignment stressed "simulate columns on page." Banged head on desk and re-did the table. * Uploaded table to server. Didn't work. * Poured over instructional materials again and viewed source code for my successful i.e. working, sites. * Cleaned-up my code and it worked!! (Much rejoincing and celebration was heard on that side of Bloomington.) * Took big breath before tackling frames again. * Poured over instructional materials again and viewed source code for working sites for examples. * Got totally confused. * Modified a step-by-step instruction in "HTML 4 Dummies." IT WORKED!! * Flush with the thrill of victory, I added more links to my contents frame. * Uploaded every working thing. * Finished Stair and uploaded it. Whew! * Will email Leanne my finished time when Stair is uploaded. Refinement: * Hopefully this won't take so long in the future. * Hopefully I won't have so many bruises on my head when I do this next. (Just kidding. Ouch!) Question: How do you code your page so your viewers can GET OUT of the frames and back to the Index? I always want to get out of frames when I am in them and I would like to know how to create a link to help my viewers do just that. Hope the question made sense. -ML
